Club History
The Full Story
Kilrush RFC, a beloved rugby club nestled in the beautiful West Clare region of Ireland, has a vibrant history that stretches back over a century. Since its founding in 1924, the club has seen many changes, with periods of growth and success punctuating its journey.
In its early years, Kilrush RFC experienced a rollercoaster of team formations and disbandments. The turning point came in 1971 when the club officially joined the Munster Branch, thanks in large part to David Glynn. David, who developed his love for rugby at Glenstal Abbey School, returned to Kilrush and, with a group of friends, reignited the local rugby spirit. Their efforts paid off in 1974 when the team reached the final of the Mansergh Cup, marking an important milestone.
The 1980s were particularly golden for Kilrush RFC, as the club clinched the Webb Cup three times, earning a formidable reputation in West Clare rugby. This success was rooted in a strong youth development program, with many young players rising through the ranks to join the senior team.
In the following years, Kilrush RFC continued to focus on nurturing young talent. The club developed a robust underage structure, fielding teams from Under 13 to Under 18. This commitment extended to girls' rugby, with Under 16 and Under 18 teams paving the way for a future senior women's team.
Kilrush RFC's facilities have also seen significant upgrades. The club now boasts its own changing rooms, a main pitch, and a second pitch added in recent years. An astroturf pitch in town ensures that training and matches can proceed regardless of the weather.
Despite facing challenges, such as a decline in player numbers over the past decade, Kilrush RFC has shown incredible resilience. Efforts to rebuild have borne fruit, and the recent establishment of an adult junior team is a testament to this revival—the first in five years.
Looking to the future, Kilrush RFC is dedicated to further player development and aims to rejoin the Junior League. Plans to install LED floodlights on the second pitch underscore the club's commitment to enhancing its facilities. The ultimate goal is to create a strong, sustainable rugby program that serves both the club and the community.
The heart and soul of Kilrush RFC are its passionate volunteers, coaches, and players. Their dedication to youth development and relentless pursuit of success have made the club a cornerstone of West Clare rugby. As Kilrush RFC continues to grow and evolve, it stands as a proud symbol of community spirit and the enduring love for rugby in West Clare.
